Put Off – Bitterness in your life

Hebrews 12:15 says, See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled.

Roots give life and support to the plant or tree that they are attached too. Be very careful that what gives you life and stability are not the roots of bitterness. When we take a bite of something bitter, our face scours and we physically look like an unhappy person. Notice what else the verse says. The end of verse 15 says, “by it many become defiled.” In other words, your bitterness not only effects you, but those around you as well.

Put On – Tenderhearted and forgiving

Ephesians 4:32 says, Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

One commentator has said it like this, “An unforgiving spirit is the devil’s playground and before long it becomes the Christian’s battleground.” Don’t let bitterness rob you of the joy in your life. “We do not forgive for our sake (though we do get a blessing from it) or even for their sake, but for Jesus’ sake.”

Conclusion

Psalm 133:1 says, Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!
